I-94 rebuilding project in Berrien County moves to next phase Saturday

July 11, 2024

Fast facts:

*Starting Saturday, crews will start shifting traffic to the westbound I-94 lanes between Puetz Road and Washington Avenue.

*Work to rebuild 8.5 miles of I-94 and four bridges, as well as repair nine other bridges, between Puetz Road and Britain Avenue in Berrien County began Monday, March 11.

*The three-year, $204 million investment is funded in part by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program.

COLOMA, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on Saturday, July 13, will shift traffic to westbound I-94 and close the eastbound Exit 23 ramps at Red Arrow Highway as part of the project to rebuild 8.5 miles of I-94 and four bridges, as well as repairing nine other bridges, between Puetz Road in Stevensville and Britain Avenue in Benton Township, Berrien County.

This year's work consists of rebuilding eastbound and westbound I-94 from Puetz Road, west of Red Arrow Highway Exit 23, to Washington Avenue, including bridges over Red Arrow Highway at Exit 23. There will be two lanes of I-94 open in each direction throughout the season. With the westbound lanes and bridges nearing completion, crews will begin shifting traffic on Saturday, July 13, to the westbound lanes and working on the eastbound lanes and bridges through December.

Red Arrow Highway will be closed at I-94 Exit 23 from Monday, July 15, through Tuesday, July 30, for bridge rebuilding. Red Arrow Highway traffic will be detoured:

Northbound Red Arrow Highway traffic heading for westbound I-94 will be detoured on northbound Red Arrow Highway and John Beers Road to westbound I-94.

Southbound Red Arrow Highway traffic heading for eastbound I-94 will be detoured on westbound I-94 and John Beers Road to eastbound I-94.

Southbound Red Arrow Highway through-traffic will be detoured on Red Arrow Highway, westbound I-94, and John Beers Road to southbound Red Arrow Highway.

Northbound Red Arrow Highway through-traffic will be detoured on Red Arrow Highway, St. Joseph Avenue, Marquette Woods Road, Cleveland Avenue, and Glenlord Road to northbound Red Arrow Highway.

Westbound I-94 Exit 23 to Red Arrow Highway will remain closed through Tuesday, July 30. The current detour will remain in place.

Eastbound I-94 Exit 23 to Red Arrow Highway will be closed from Monday, July 15, through Sunday, Dec. 1, with traffic detoured to John Beers Road Exit 22.

Other 2024 work includes drainage, sound abatement barriers and culverts between Washington Avenue and Puetz Road.

Work in 2025 includes rebuilding westbound I-94 from Washington Avenue to Empire Avenue and the westbound I-94 bridge over Pipestone Road. There will be two lanes of I-94 open in each direction, and Pipestone Road traffic will be detoured on M-139 and Napier Avenue. Traffic will move to the newly built westbound I-94 lanes in 2026, and the eastbound lanes and bridge over Pipestone Road will be rebuilt.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 2,911 jobs.

$90 million of the funding for this three-year, $205 million investment is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improve the condition of the state's infrastructure.
